Ready to add an adorable tail butt plug to your sex toy collection?
Undecided on which type you want or how to care for it?
Then you’ve come to the right place!
In this guide, I’ll help answer all your butt plug-related questions. Then I’ll go over some of the different tail styles available and recommend a specific plug for each.
What is a Butt Plug?
First things first, if you aren’t sure what exactly a butt plug is, that’s important to cover before looking at types.
You’ve probably already seen a butt plug if you’ve been to a sex toy shop online or in real life.
Now:
Unlike a vibrator, which is designed to thrust and mimic sex, butt plugs stay in place. They’re there to help you get accustomed to anal play or just to provide a full feeling for people who enjoy it.
Butt plugs are distinguished by their shape. You’ll quickly notice that they have a flared design. This is intentionally created to make insertion smoother and to prevent the plug from being sucked into your rectum.
Believe it or not, this does happen, so be safe out there!
Ordinary vs. Tail Plugs
With an ordinary butt plug, the style is designed to let you wear it around town unnoticed. This is one of the biggest benefits to butt plugs; how secretive they are.
Walking around with a plug inserted creates friction and a sensation that some people really love.
A lot of people also choose butt plugs because they don’t get in the way during other sexual activities. For example, they’re easy to wear during sex. You can find some of our top recommended butt plugs here.
Tail butt plugs are the same as ordinary plugs, but with a tail attached to the end.
Think about how you’d attach a tail to your Halloween costume, except that you don’t have to wear anything except the tail.
Some of them have detachable tails that clip on or have a magnetic design that allows you to add or remove the tail. That way, you can also use it as an ordinary butt plug.
Now, a tail butt plug without a detachable tail isn’t exactly discreet, although you may be able to fit some of the smaller tails under a skirt or dress.
But this style of butt plug is far cuter, and that alone is often enough to justify the less discreet design.
Types of Tail Butt Plugs
There are many different types of tails including fox tails with a long, bushy design, racoon tails with strips, long and thin cat tails, dog and puppy tails, and corkscrew-shaped pig tails.
You can also find fluffy rabbit tails and long horse (or pony) tails. While they most often come in natural colors, you can also find multi-colored or unnatural colored options.
The fur on these products is typically synthetic, but some use real fur. If you’re vegan, it’s worth making sure that the product uses either fake or cruelty-free fur.
Plug Materials
When it comes to sex toys, the material of the insertable portion of the product is so important. Sure, it’s tempting to just buy the cheapest option, but quality matters when it comes to your most sensitive areas.
Here’s the deal:
While the way the tail looks does matter, using a safe plug is even more critical than aesthetics.
Thankfully, there are plenty body-safe options out there.
As mentioned, a flared design is essential to avoid mishaps like the toy being lost in your rectum. Since your anus is a sphincter, it’s critical that you don’t put items inside of it that can get lost.
Even though the tail will provide some insurance against this mishap, a flared base toy is still the only acceptable type of butt plug out there. Here are a few body-safe butt plug materials to look for in your next plug:
- Medical-grade silicone
- Temperature-safe glass
- Stainless steel
- ABS plastic
Temperature-safe glass will ensure that you can use your toy for temperature play safely.
Since silicone and stainless steel are non-porous, they’re also the easiest to clean. However, this comes at a tradeoff since they tend to cost more.
Keep in mind that, while some types may be safe, I advise avoiding rubber butt plugs because rubber is a porous material that’s nearly impossible to sanitize fully.
Combine that with the bacteria in the anal region and this material is best to avoid altogether.
Using These Plugs Safely
Before you use your butt plug, check it for scratches, rough bits, or dents. If it’s smooth, you’re good to go.
Just remember that the anus is very sensitive, so even a small imperfection can cause discomfort.
Care instructions
Any time you buy a new sex toy, it’s a good idea to check out the care instructions for that specific product.
This will include which types of lubricant are safe with the toy and will often list the best way to clean the material, as well.
Keep in mind that what I give you are general care instructions and always checking the information on your particular toy is recommended.
Cleaning and Storage
Always sanitize your toy both before and after you use it. Store it in a safe area free from dust and debris. For the actual tail portion, you’ll need to look at the care instructions with your specific product.
Most of the time, you’ll need to spot clean the tail rather than washing the whole thing. This is important for keeping it sanitary since it will come into close contact with bacteria in the anal area.
Going against care instructions may cause it to deteriorate faster, so be careful with how you clean and store it.

Lubricant
Using lubricant for toys is always important, especially when they’re anal toys. Anal penetration requires much more lubricant than regular intercourse.
Why is that?
The anus is much tighter, which causes more friction, and it doesn’t self-lubricate as the vagina does.
This means you must apply plenty of lube to your anus and the toy, and potentially even pause a few times during anal play to add more.
I advise you to only buy lubricant specifically designated for anal play. This type of lube is thicker and provides a smoother barrier to prevent too much friction.
Without enough lube, you could risk a lot of discomfort and possibly even damage to your sensitive tissues. Just remember not to use silicone lubricant on silicone toys, as it can cause warping.

Ok, now let’s take a look at some actual toys!
The Fox Tail Butt Plug
My favorite fox tail butt plug is this realistic Brown Faux Fur option offered by SexyPinkKitty on Etsy. It’s made with stainless steel, a nonporous and easy-to-clean material.
The plug comes in small (2.75 inches), medium (3.2 inches), and large (3.6) and the tail is 12 inches long. The small version is a good choice for people who are new to butt plugs.
Another good choice is the Frisky Faux Fur Fox Tail on LoveHoney, if you’d rather have an arctic fox look.
This product has a 4-inch silicone plug that offers vibrations, so it’s a good potential option for people who already have a little experience with anal.
Since the plug is made with silicone, water-based lubricants are recommended with this tail butt plug.
The Wolf Tail Butt Plug
This Brown Wolf Tail Plug by OKOVA on Etsy is a super long and sleek option. You can choose between many different plugs.
There are different choices in sizes as well as clip-on vs. plug tails, detachable options, and more.
The detachable design is great because it enables you to clean the plug without worrying about ruining the faux fur.
Another great benefit of this tail butt plug is that you can choose between either metal or silicone for the material of the toy. The fur is artificial and has a beautiful, fluffy, and natural look to it.
You can add matching ears, as well, if you want to have a howling good time and fully immerse yourself in the wolf character.
The Cat Tail Butt Plug
If you want a cat tail plug that comes in many colors (black, white, pink, rainbow, and more), this 2.75-inch toy offered by SexyPinkKitty on Etsy could be a good option. Its small size makes it a good choice for beginners.
The silicone steel base of the plug is smooth, easy to clean, and works with any type of lubricant.
The Horse (or Pony) Tail Butt Plug
The DOMINIX Deluxe Pony Tail Butt Plug is a glass option with an insertable length of 3.8 inches.
This material is easy to clean, works with all types of lube, and is temperature-responsive and shatter proof.
The size makes it a better choice for people who have at least some experience with anal play. The tail is made with synthetic hair that feels pleasantly soft.
Another fun option for a horse tail is the Unicorn Silicone Rainbow Plug.
The multicolored faux hair is attached to a silicone plug with 3.75 insertable inches.
This plug is best used with water-based anal lubricant. Make sure the lube is specifically for anal, since this type will have a thicker consistency to protect your butt.
The Bunny Tail Butt Plug
If you want something cute and subtle for your first tail, this Magnetic White Tail Glass Plug by Crystal Delights is a good potential toy.
It’s made in the USA with medical-grade Pyrex, which makes it perfect for temperature play.
Since the tail is magnetic, you don’t always have to use it and can take it off when you wish to. The insertable length is 2.8 inches, so it’s a good potential option for intermediate anal explorers.
And, although the tail fur is real, it’s cruelty-free.
The Pig Tail Butt Plug
For a truly unique tail butt plug, this Pink Pig Tail by BONBDSM on Etsy is a good choice.
The handmade toy is crafted with pink silicone for a body-safe experience and comes in a few different sizes, so you can choose the length you’re comfortable with. This product comes with a Lifetime Replacement Warranty.

A tail butt plug is a quick and easy way to inject some adventure into your sex life. Whether you’re more interested in solo play or tantalizing a partner, this type of toy is a great choice.
